- What is stick drift and why does it happen?
- Drift is a stick reporting movement while nobody touches it. Most sticks read their position with two potentiometers, tiny carbon tracks that a wiper slides over. The track wears into a groove with use, dust and grease build up, and the resting reading slowly shifts away from centre. It is wear, not a setting, which is why it gets worse with time.
- How does a deadzone help?
- A deadzone tells the game to treat any stick position inside a small circle around the centre as zero. If the drift stays inside that circle, the game never sees it. The cost is that the first few percent of real movement are ignored too, so the deadzone should be as small as still covers the drift, which is what the suggestion here aims for.
- What are Hall effect sticks?
- Hall effect sticks read the position with a magnet and a sensor instead of a sliding contact, so there is no track to wear out. They are an option on several third-party controllers and can be retrofitted in some first-party ones. They still need a small deadzone for sensor noise, but the slow creep that comes from wear does not happen.
- Why does the page only show the standard layout?
- The browser exposes a controller as numbered axes and buttons. For controllers it recognises, it arranges them in a standard order where axes 0 to 3 are the two sticks and buttons 6 and 7 are the triggers, and that order is what this page relies on. A controller without the standard mapping still shows its first four axes, but the labels may not match the physical sticks.
- Is drift covered by warranty?
- Often yes, within the warranty period, since drift is a wear defect. Keep the measurement as a reference when you contact the manufacturer or the shop. Outside the warranty, a replacement stick module is cheaper than a new controller, and Hall effect modules remove the problem for good.
