Dead Pixel Test for Gaming Monitors

Your whole panel turns one solid colour at a time. A dead pixel stays black through all of them; a stuck subpixel glows red, green or blue on backgrounds where it should not; a hot pixel stays white on black. Pause on each colour and scan the full screen.

Wipe the panel with a microfibre cloth before you judge anything. Dust from the box and fingerprints from setup are the number one false alarm on a monitor that is hours old.

How to check a new gaming monitor for dead pixels

  1. 1 Do this on the day the monitor arrives, not a month later. Most shops give you 14 to 30 days to return an unwanted purchase with no questions asked; after that you depend on the manufacturer's pixel policy, which is far less generous.
  2. 2 Set the native resolution and turn brightness to a normal level, then launch the fullscreen test. Step through white, black, red, green, blue and grey, and on each one look across the entire panel including the edges, roughly an arm's length away.
  3. 3 Note what you find and where. A dot that stays black on white and every colour is dead. A dot that stays lit in one colour is stuck. On an OLED also check the black screen in a dark room for faint bright spots, since those panels have no backlight to hide behind.
  4. 4 Take a photo with the colour visible if you find anything, then contact the seller while the return window is open. One faulty pixel is often enough to return within that window even when the manufacturer would not class it as a defect.

Dead pixel questions from monitor buyers

How many dead pixels justify returning a gaming monitor?
Within the shop's return period: any number, because you are returning an unwanted item, not claiming a warranty. After that period the ISO 9241-307 classes apply, and a typical class II monitor tolerates two fully dead pixels plus a few stuck subpixels per million before it counts as defective. Premium brands sometimes promise zero bright pixels; check the policy for your model.
Dead, stuck or hot pixel: what is the difference?
A dead pixel gets no power and is black on every background. A stuck pixel has a subpixel frozen on, so it shows as a red, green or blue dot on white or black. A hot pixel is fully on and shows as a white dot on black. Stuck ones occasionally recover; dead and hot ones do not.
Can I fix a stuck pixel myself?
Sometimes. Cycling colours rapidly over the spot for a while, which some pixel-fixer videos do, can unstick a subpixel. Do not press hard on a panel, and never on an OLED. If it does not improve within a few minutes it is a hardware fault, and the return window beats any trick.
Does this test work on an OLED gaming monitor?
Yes, and it is more important there. Use the black screen in a dark room to spot pixels that will not turn off, and the white screen for any that stay dark. Keep the static test short on an OLED, a few minutes per colour is plenty, and let the panel run its pixel refresh afterwards.
I found a faulty pixel on a monitor I have had for a year. Any options?
The return window is gone, so it comes down to the warranty terms. Count the faulty pixels, compare with the manufacturer's published pixel policy for your panel class, and file a warranty claim if the count exceeds it. If it sits within tolerance the honest answer is that it is considered normal, and a single dead pixel outside the centre is easy to forget in motion.
