How to run a reaction test like an aim trainer drill

  1. 1 Click the panel once to arm it and let your hand rest on the mouse the way it does on the aim-trainer start screen. The red phase lasts one to five seconds, randomized each round, so there is nothing to time.
  2. 2 The instant the panel goes green, click. What you get is the full chain from your eyes to the switch in milliseconds, the same chain that decides a peek-and-fire duel.
  3. 3 Clicking during red counts as a false start and is thrown out. In game that is the pre-fire that hits nothing and gives away your position.
  4. 4 Play at least five rounds, ten is better, and read the average. Warm up for a few rounds first; cold hands are consistently 20 to 30 ms slower.

How fast do pro players react?
Published tests of pro CS2, Valorant and Apex players cluster around 150 to 200 ms for a simple visual stimulus, and the average person with a mouse sits near 250 ms. A 200 to 230 ms average is already above typical for a casual player. The gap between you and a pro is mostly crosshair placement and game sense, not this number.
Does a 144 Hz or 240 Hz monitor change my score?
A little, and measurably. At 60 Hz the green can wait up to 16 ms before it is drawn; at 240 Hz that is around 4 ms. Add input lag from the display and a wireless mouse and the same person can test 10 to 20 ms faster on a competitive setup. Only compare scores taken on the same gear.
Why does my score jump around between rounds?
Because attention is not constant. During a five-second red you drift in and out of focus, and the round catches you wherever you happen to be. That is why the average matters and why a single heroic 130 ms should be ignored.
Can I actually get faster, or is it genetic?
The raw nerve-and-muscle floor is mostly fixed, but most players are not at their floor. Sleep, warm-up, posture and watching the whole panel instead of one pixel shave off tens of milliseconds. In game, the bigger win comes from reacting to sound cues and predicting angles, which this test does not measure.
Should I use this or an aim trainer?
Both do different jobs. This isolates pure reaction time with no aiming involved, so it is a clean baseline to check on tired days or after a hardware change. An aim trainer adds target acquisition and tracking on top. Test here first, then go train.
